This 4CD Box Set presents music composed by the 20th Century Spanish composer Joaquin RodrigoFind albums by this artist, which was recorded by the Royal Philharmonic OrchestraFind albums by this artist, London Symphony OrchestraFind albums by this artist, and Orquestra Sinfonica del Estado de MexicoFind albums by this artist, all three conducted by Mexican pianist and conductor Enrique BatizFind albums by this artist, who died a year ago (2025). The Box Set includes fifteen compositions, a total of forty-eight tracks.

Rodrigo, one of the greatest composers of the last Century, was a very prolific composer, concentrating mostly of non-symphonic works, mostly concertos for guitar, cello and other instruments. His most famous composition is the “Concerto de Aranjuez” (which is included herein), but all of his music is deeply melodic and exquisitely put together. He was deeply influences by Spanish folklore and as such, his music is almost instantly recognizable.

I have often wondered why Rodrigo did not venture into any of the 20th Century musical trends, Avant-Garde or other experimental directions, but his own statements consistently emphasized his dedication to the Spanish music tradition. He was aware of the contemporary trends, but decided to ignore them, concentrating on being “an improved Rodrigo” as time moved on.

Overall, this is a superb compilation of some of the most beautiful music ever written, which is a pure delight from start to finish. Listeners, who are familiar with just the one famous piece by Rodrigo, will be deeply surprised by the scope and wealth of his music. Beyond recommendation!
