VANDOORN ~ THE QUESTION IS ME
RIFF 85030 ~ NETHERLANDS ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1993 Released: 1994

This is the debut album by Dutch Jazz vocalist Ineke van DoornFind albums by this artist (later VandoornFind albums by this artist), recorded with a quintet which includes guitarist Marc van VugtFind albums by this artist, pianist Joren van VlietFind albums by this artist, bassist Wiro MahieuFind albums by this artist and drummer Chris StrikFind albums by this artist. British trumpeter Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist guests on three tracks and Canadian pianist Don ThompsonFind albums by this artist guests on one track. The album presents nine tracks, all of which feature lyrics by van Doorn, seven were composed by van Vugt and one each by Wheeler and Thompson.

The album offers a collection of nice songs, all performed without a hitch by these young (at the time) musicians, who are obviously well schooled and talented. The couple of van Doorn and van Vugt continue their music career to this very day and continue to record albums.

Obviously my interest in this album was the presence of Wheeler, who perform brilliantly here, as always. His openness to play and record with young musician the world over is a fascinating story and makes collecting a “complete” collection of his recordings quite a challenge, which of course I gladly take a part in.

Overall, this is a charming, a bit naïve but still sounding good today album by a Dutch couple, with Wheeler playing marvelous soli on three tracks and contributing music to one song. Another Wheeler discography rarity in the collection.

KENNY WHEELER / SONNY GREENWICH ~ LIVE AT THE MONTREAL BISTRO
JUSTIN TIME 114 (Barcode: 068944011421) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1993 - 1997 Released: 1997

This is a little known live recording by the British Jazz trumpeter / composer Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist with Canadian guitarist Sonny GreenwichFind albums by this artist and other top Canadian Jazz players: pianist Don ThompsonFind albums by this artist, bassist Jim VivianFind albums by this artist and drummer Barry ElmesFind albums by this artist. American drummer Joe LaBarberaFind albums by this artist plays on two tracks. The music was recorded during two Canadian appearances, four years apart, and presents six tracks: one original composition by Wheeler, another one by Thompson, two by Greenwich and two are standards.

The music is all well within mainstream Jazz boundaries, with the original compositions being sufficient to keep the music interesting and the performances by all the participants are certainly solid enough to make the album worth listening too, not only due to Wheeler´s presence.

The relaxed club atmosphere allows the musicians to stretch out and deliver lengthy soli, which are well structured and in case of Wheeler are simply phenomenal, as always.

These are certainly not Wheeler´s most important or significant statements, but they are a nice document of his less demanding appearances with Canadian colleagues, during his visits in his former Homeland. For the many Wheeler´s followers and collectors, this is of course a must.
