CHRISTER FREDRIKSEN ~ VIT
LOSEN 170 (Barcode: 7090025831706) ~ NORWAY ~ Electronic & Ambient

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2017

This is the third album by Norwegian guitarist / composer Christer FredriksenFind albums by this artist, and his first solo guitar album. He performs nine of his original compositions, all recorded live and without overdubs.

This is definitely one of the most original albums I have come across lately, which boldly crosses genre borders and combines improvisation and ambient sonic explorations. Fredriksen leaves behind the conventional Jazz format of his two earlier albums and moves into new territory, which has very little to do with Jazz per se, and yet makes perfect sense to a Jazz listener, like me, since it develops the basic deep-rooted melodic themes changing them on the fly, which basically is what Jazz is all about.

The overall sonic aura of the album is somewhat somber and contemplative, as appropriate for music originating in Norway, with the familiar Scandinavian lyricism, but also majestic and even a bit sacred at times, definitely not something one might expect from a solo electric guitar album.

Overall this is an eye (ear) opener in many respects and for people who think they have already heard everything that can be done on a guitar, this album proves them wrong. Fans of Nordic / ambient music will find here everything they can hope for and guitar freaks will probably put the record on "repeat" for a while, to digest this unique concept. Well done indeed!
