ART LANDE / JAN GARBAREK ~ RED LANTA
ECM 1038 (Barcode: 602567430476) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2019

This is a reissue of the only album by the duo of American pianist / composer Art LandeFind albums by this artist and Norwegian flautist / saxophonist Jan GarbarekFind albums by this artist. It was also Lande’s debut recording as a leader / coleader. The album presents nine tracks, all of which are composed by Lande. The album was recorded at the legendary Arne BendiksenFind albums by this artist studio in Oslo, which was managed by Jan Erik KongshaugFind albums by this artist until 1974, where many early ECMFind albums on this label album were recorded, and where the “ECM sound” was first established.

The music is very melodic, almost sentimental, and although improvised, has a limited Jazz feel, at times close to New Age music, extremely popular at the time. Garbarek, one of the Godfathers of the Nordic / Scandinavian Jazz sound, sounds here less typical than on his solo recordings, mostly playing flute, which is not his primary instrument.

I have not listened to this album for at least forty years or so, and in retrospect I remembered it a much stronger statement than it sounds to me now, which is almost kitschy, over-sentimental and even somewhat boring? Mea culpa probably, but for me the charm is gone.

Overall, despite its sentimental value as one of the early ECM albums that caused the Americans to start listen to ECM albums, now I understand why they liked it so much… it’s just full of really pretty melodies, offers a lot of great instrumental arpeggios and is not too difficult, in short it is damn likeable. Oh well, times they are a changin’
