  | POPOL VUH ~ AFFENSTUNDE / DIE NACHT DER SEELE (TANTRIC SONGS) HIGH TIDE 9108 ~ GERMANY ~ Progressive Rock
German group Popol Vuh were one of the most important and interesting outfits to emerge from the Krautrock scene. Their interest was mainly into the modern electronic music and later they also incorporated world music elements into their creative output. They were the first German group to use the mellotron and their leader Florian Fricke was one of the most prominenet composer in the field of electronic music. This album combines two of their LPs - the debut album from 1970 (Affenstunde) and their 1979 album (Tantric Songs) - providing an excellent example of their ability to change and develop.

One of the greatest admireres of Popol Vuh`s music was the prominent German movie director Werner Herzog and starting from 1976 Popol Vuh created a series of sountracks for his films, including Aguirre, Hertz Aus Glass, Nosferatu and Fitzcarraldo, which is present on this album. Herzog`s dreamy, mysterious and stunningly beautiful films were a perfect match for Popol Vuh`s music and this is one of the most successful of the music / film cooperations.

  | POPOL VUH ~ YOGA HIGH TIDE 9119 ~ GERMANY ~ Progressive Rock
Excellent album from 1976 by the German group, which shifted from the purely electronic music they played in the early 1970`s to more world influenced music in the late 1970`s. As the title suggests, this album incorporates elements of Indian music and the two long compositions are very meditative. The ethnic elements combined with the western electronics are a work of love and the effect is beautiful.
