LOW-FLY QUINTET ~ STOP FOR A WHILE
LOSEN 188 (Barcode: 7090025831881) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2017

This is the debut album by the Norwegian ensemble called Low-Flying QuintetFind albums by this artist, which features the vocalist Camilla TomtaFind albums by this artist, cellist Siri SnortheimFind albums by this artist, pianist Ole GjostolFind albums by this artist, Spanish (resident in Norway) bassist Uri SalaFind albums by this artist and drummer Skjalg LidsheimFind albums by this artist. The album presents ten songs, five of which are originals (music and lyrics) by Tomta and five are classic standards.

The music is deeply rooted in early vocal Jazz tradition, going back to the days of Jazz clubs, vaudeville and burlesque in the 1930s, soaked in Blues and Soulful vocal delivery. The originals are not far away musically from the standards, which enables a coherent continuity between the songs and an overall consistent atmosphere the album successfully presents.

The quintet has quite an unusual sound with the cello being the lead instrument, but it works surprisingly well. The piano and rhythm section are more "conventional" and accompany the vocals tastefully and amicably. The vocals are slightly "over the top", trying a bit too much to sound like the vocalists of the period, rather than present a contemporary personal interpretation, but they are well done and definitely manage to build up the intended atmosphere.

Overall this is a tasteful vocal Jazz album, paying tribute to early vocal Jazz tradition and offers interesting instrumental accompaniment, and which should be enjoyed by vocal Jazz enthusiasts, especially in view of its originality.
