The album collects five musical pieces, which represent the cross-genre projects released by the label as part of its “Revisions” series. The music offers quite a diverse stylistic amalgam, dominated by the two pieces by Herdzin, which comprise almost half of the album’s duration, ranging from romantic easy listening Classical music to Jazz Avant-Garde and Avant-Pop. The level of the performances is absolutely superb and the music offers intelligent and highly aesthetic listening experience. Overall, this is another highly successful album in this wonderful series, and certainly something worthy of pursuing by the Jazz-Classical Fusion enthusiasts. Since these pieces do not appear on any of the albums released in this series, it is absolutely worth getting as well. Wholeheartedly recommended!

The album presents a seven part Jazz suite for piano trio, voice, string orchestra and soloist, which attempts to "define" what "Polish Music" means in general and especially in the Jazz context as what we understand under the term "Polish Jazz". Five parts of the suite are based on Polish Folk tunes, one is a Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist composition and one is a tune composed by Marcin JanuszkiewiczFind albums by this artist. Jagodzinski and Auguscik arranged the vocal parts and Jagodzinski wrote the elaborate piano trio / string orchestra arrangements. The concept behind this album obviously points towards the conclusion that contemporary Polish Music / Polish Jazz are a synthesis of the Polish Folk tradition with contemporary music forms. The Polish Folk tradition is most obviously identified with the Polish Folklore dances, such as kujawiak, mazurka, oberek and others, but also with the intrinsic Polish melancholy and lyricism, which create its unique characteristics, which are instantly recognizable to a trained ear. Regardless of the concept, this album is first and foremost a true celebration of music, crossing and bridging between Folklore, Jazz and Classical Music and doing it in an impressive, intelligent and truly beautiful way. All the parts and ideas fall together into an amazing amalgam, which is a delightful listening experience. The album is also a wonderful platform to enjoy the individual contributions by the participating musicians. Auguscik again proves that she has very little competition on the local scene and her wonderful sensitivity and power of expression are simply stunning. Her appearance on this album is somewhat prophetic in the sense that her album "Inspired By LutoslawskiFind albums with this title", which was recorded four years after this one, would deal with the same subject matter. Jagodzinski, who also plays accordion on this album, and his trio cohorts, as well as the soloists and orchestra all perform spotlessly and harmoniously, with obvious dedication and joy of creation. This is the best album by far that Jagodzinski recorded during his splendid career, and one of the best attempts to create a coherent musical concept, dedicated to Polish Music. Personally I´d love to see more such attempts done by other musicians. Discovering one´s musical roots and traditions is surely preferable to imitating other cultures. This album is a pure delight from start to finish and I recommend it wholeheartedly to every Polish Jazz fan, as it reveals many of the innermost secrets about what Polish Jazz really means.

The album presents nine tracks, composed by various Polish composers and arranged by Herdzin (six tracks), Sabina MeckFind albums by this artist (two tracks) and Joanna SzymalaFind albums by this artist (one track), all with the lyrics by Wojciech MlynarskiFind albums by this artist, a distinguished Polish lyricist, who contributed lyrics to numerous classic Polish songs, whose talent this album celebrates by presenting them in a Jazzy framework. The music is all absolutely perfectly suited to the purpose, with superb arrangements that go hand in hand with these mostly highly lyrical / romantic songs, emphasizing their beauty. Myrczek, often called “the Polish Frank Sinatra” which is not entirely without a basis, is absolutely ideal for the job. Schmidt ornaments the songs by his short, concise but again perfectly crafted soli, and the rest of the participants are all Masters of their trade, and as usual do all in their power to make everything work as planned. Encrusted with the delicate string arrangements, this music is a true “whole package” in every sense. Of course I can only pity all my friends, who are not Polish language speakers, who are obviously destined to miss the pleasure of enjoying these sophisticated, intelligent and masterly woven lyrics by Mlynarski, but on the other hand my better half, whose knowledge of the Polish language is limited to “pierogi” and “prosze Pani”, loves this album and anything else by Myrczek, she just ignores the lyrics and enjoys the velvety voice, so here you are. This honestly is a universal piece of music. Overall, this is a beautiful vocal Jazz album, which borders on “Jazz & Poetry” due to Mlynarski’s sublime lyrics, with superb instrumental parts performed by some of the best Polish Jazz players, masterfully arranged and altogether delightful. What a joy!

MAREK NAPIORKOWSKI ~ STRING THEORY AGORA 5903111498719 (Barcode: 5903111498719) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion Recorded: 2021 Released: 2022 This is an album by celebrated Polish Jazz guitarist / composer Marek NapiorkowskiFind albums by this artist, recorded in a trio setting with bassist Max MuchaFind albums by this artist and drummer Michal BryndalFind albums by this artist and accompanied by the AUKSO Chamber OrchestraFind albums by this artist conducted by Marek MosFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven original pieces, all composed and arranged by the leader, with orchestrations by Nikola KolodziejczykFind albums by this artist. The music is mostly highly melodic and the guitar has a strong Fusiony tinge, but the orchestral arrangements take the music all over the place, which creates a somewhat confusing general impression. As a result, the album leaves the listener with more questions than answers, both musically and aesthetically. Napiorkowski is of course a great guitarist and writes beautiful tunes, earning a lot of respect over time, but this highly extravagant experiment might have proved just one step too far. I wonder how this album might have sounded without the orchestral parts. Mucha is one of the best Polish bassists today and his pulsations are the main reason this music is listenable and somewhat coherent at all. Bryndal keeps the groove rolling, which also helps, and the fragments when the trio plays without the orchestral accompaniment (or when that accompaniment is kept in the background) the music sounds great. But when the ambitious arrangements take over, the charm is gone. It is no secret that I have had a problem with Kolodziejczyk’s methodology towards Jazz since he arrived on the scene, although I tried to approach every new recording he was involved with, with no prejudice (I swear). But sadly I find his over-ambitious arrangements simply way overboard. But that of course is just my personal opinion, which can be ignored at will. Overall, this might have been a great guitar trio album, which gets lost in the orchestral arrangements. This takes none of the great talents Napiorkowski and his cohorts have to offer away, and despite my reservations many people might love and enjoy this album, and probably will.

The music, recorded live, presents a violin concerto in three movements, and includes both the audio (CD) and video (DVD) version of the premiere performance of the concerto. The music is a typical romantic Classical concerto, incorporating melodic themes strongly based on Polish folkloristic influences, full of melancholy and beautiful lyricism. The Jazz and Classical elements are loosely integrated, which causes the music to move between the Classical and Jazz worlds rather than present a unified / amalgamated approach, with the solo violin parts serving as a bridge between the two worlds. As expected, the performances, both by the septet members and the string orchestra, are excellent from start to finish, as are the violin solo parts by Slowinski. He joins the ranks of the young Polish violin stars, which are constantly growing, building the new generation of the Polish Jazz Violin School. This ambitious undertaking is perhaps a tad too tamed overall, with Slowinski taking no risks and following 19th Century Classical Music conventions and mainstream Jazz patterns, whereas contemporary listeners probably expect a little more experimentation these days. Having said that, this album is a solid, well structured and beautifully performed piece of music, which can be enjoyed by a wide range of listeners, both from the Jazz and Classical Music circles. Definitely worth investigating!

PAWEL SZAMBURSKI / AUKSO ~ DLUGO, DLUGO NIC, A POTEM WSZYSTKO ROPE WORM 5 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion Recorded: 2024 Released: 2025 This is the 3rd solo album by Polish Jazz clarinetist / composer Pawel SzamburskiFind albums by this artist. It is a live recording with the AUKSO Chamber OrchestraFind albums by this artist, conducted by Marek MosFind albums by this artist, during the Auksodrone Festival. The album presents seven tracks, which are parts of a suite that lasts for almost forty minutes, composed by Szamburski. The music is an absolutely stunning piece of contemporary composition, which combines Szamburski’s virtuosity as a performer, with the Chamber Orchestra’s brilliant accompaniment into an integral sonic experience, which is completely unique and hits the listener with unprecedented power of expression. Szamburski employs a wide set of musical motifs, including his beloved Hassidic mysticism, contemporary Jazz oriented improvisation and Classical chamber orchestral layers, which are amalgamated completely symbiotically and create a powerful, almost overwhelming musical statement. Despite its seemingly limited instrumental potential, the music manages to construct a penetrating utterance, which hits the listener with a power of a hurricane. Szamburski’s recording legacy with the BastardaFind albums by this artist trio, IrchaFind albums by this artist quartet and his solo work, make him one of the most significant and creative figures on the contemporary Polish musical scene, completely cross-genre and idiom, with a total dedication to inventiveness and originality, not only as a musician, but also as a Cultural activist. I have been extremely lucky to be able to follow his activities closely for over a decade now, and he never ceases to surprise and amaze me time and again. Overall, this is a brilliant piece of music, which penetrates the mind and the soul with the same intensity and effectiveness. Deeply moving, always personal, it takes no prisoners emotionally. I have no illusions as to the fact that music of such quality is destined to be recognized only marginally, which is a travesty of sorts, but I hope that the suite’s title (“For a long, long time nothing, and then everything”) will become proverbial, as far as the fate of this album (and Szamburski’s career) is concerned. Thank you for this magnificent gift of music, my Friend!

MILOSZ WOSKO ~ URBAN RESIDENTS` BELIEFS REQUIEM / OPUS 2019/35 ~ POLAND ~ Classical Recorded: 2019 Released: 2019 This is the debut album by young Polish pianist / composer Milosz WoskoFind albums by this artist, one of the upcoming Polish contemporary Classical Music activists. The album presents three instrumental works: "Dawn" for strings and accordion, played by the excellent AUKSO Chamber OrchestraFind albums by this artist and accordionist Maciej FrackiewiczFind albums by this artist, "Urban Dances" a five part suite for string quartet, piano and percussion played by the Kwartet PolonikaFind albums by this artist, pianist Emilia SitarzFind albums by this artist and percussionist Hubert ZemlerFind albums by this artist and finally "Five Discussions On Difficult Topics" for brass quintet played by the Polish Brass QuintetFind albums by this artist. Although quite diverse stylistically and tonally the music of Wosko seems to have a close association to cinematic themes, which is hardly surprising considering his work as composer of film soundtracks and other audiovisual concept works. As he writes in the album´s liner notes, his music is about our day-to-day 21st Century hectic life under constant pressure of time and routine, and the possibility to find the emotions that the human race seems to be losing on its path. The music, although modern, is not Avant-Garde per se, maintaining a strong melody contents and using familiar Classical Music vocabulary. It also offers much of the typical Polish melancholy, that characterizes the works of Polish modernist Masters, and which is probably unavoidable, almost genetically implanted within all Polish music across the genres and generations. The diversity of the compositions makes this album a superb listening experience, never allowing the listener to get too comfortable within the framework of one piece and moving into another one, which requires a swift intellectual reboot. And yet all three compositions have common characteristics, even when performed by different instrumental settings, which again is hardly surprising and indicates that Wosko has already managed to achieve a voice of his own. Overall this is a splendid piece of music, highly interesting and aesthetically pleasing as well as excellently executed and recorded. This music should by highly appealing to a wide range of music connoisseurs, not necessarily only Classical Music buffs, but all quality music lovers. Congratulations are in order and wishes of good luck in the future!

HUBERT ZEMLER & AUKSO CHAMBER ORCHESTRA ~ TOXIC POEM AUDIO CAVE 2024/004 (Barcode: 5908298549803) ~ POLAND ~ Avant-Garde Jazz-Classical Fusion Recorded: 2022 Released: 2024 This is an album by Polish percussionist / composer Hubert ZemlerFind albums by this artist, recorded with the AUKSO Chamber OrchestraFind albums by this artist, conducted by Marek MosFind albums by this artist. The album presents five tracks, which are parts of the suite, which gives the album its title. The music lasts for just slightly over thirty minutes. The suite is basically an Avant-Garde piece, which floats between contemporary Classical Music and Improvised Music, although most of the music is strictly composed and features only limited improvised elements. The music is minimalist, fragmented and offers a difficult to follow continuity, which appeals probably a limited audience, even among the most adventurous listeners. Zemler plays a wide range of percussion instruments, with the orchestra creating a background layer of Ambient, repetitive themes, stylistically resembling the minimal music by composers like Steve ReichFind albums by this artist, Terry RileyFind albums by this artist and others, highly popular in the 1960s, but almost completely abandoned since. Overall, as much as I admire Zemler’s originality and non-conformism over the years, I find this album somewhat less interesting or innovative than his usual work. Of course, Polish music needs adventurers and pioneers like Zemler, so I thank him for this piece of his creativity.
