Finland, a small Scandinavian country, is one of the most musical countries in the world, with incredible music being created in every possible genre. Some of my favorite music comes from Finland and I´ve maintained a close contact with many Finnish musicians over the years and have a very extensive collection of Finnish albums. This small, but very informative book, published by the Finnish Music Information Centre, gives an overview of the scene, with some history and list of activities, festivals, education institutions, etc. richly illustrated with many photographs. A great introduction to the Finnish scene.

This is the definitive biography of singer Bassie Smith, who was the most important figure of the genre in its early days. Albertson is an experienced author and his excellent books combines facts and critisicm. Essential reading to anyone interested in Jazz history and the roots of 20th Century music.

Well researched and well written biography of Janis Joplin, one of the most spectacular and tragic figures of Rock. Based on interviews with people who were close to Janis through her life, this book portrays her life, which was sadly much too short, revealing many aspects of her complex and unstable personality. Fascinating reading!

This small book is a guide to the Jazz scene in the French province of Ile De France, which surrounds Paris. It includes a list of clubs, venues, festivals, recording studios, schools, etc., a plethora of information which proves how much Jazz is (and always has been) alive in France.

This is basically an introduction to the French Jazz scene and a list of active Jazz musicians (at the time of publication) with biographies and contacts. Over 300 musicians are listed. The book is bi-lingual - in French and English. Excellent source of information.
